Lung Cancer in
Never Smokers

1 in 7 lung cancer patients has never smoked.

About 6,000 never-smokers die of lung cancer each year - greater than the number who die of cervical cancer, lymphoma, leukaemia and ovarian cancer.

Lung cancer in never smokers (LCINS) is the 8th leading cause of cancer deaths in the UK.

LC patients who have never smoked are often younger, sometimes much younger, that other LC patients

Nearly 9 out of 10 of our members with ALK-positive LC have never smoked or were only light smokers.

Nearly 9 out of 10 of our members were diagnosed at Stage IV.

We have members who were diagnosed in their teens and many more who were diagnosed in their twenties and thirties.  About half of our members were under 50 when diagnosed

The historically strong, and correct, messaging on smoking and lung cancer has inadvertently contributed to

  • lung cancer receiving much less press and political attention than many other cancers, such as breast, prostate and ovarian cancers, and

  • the failure of both primary care and the public to be aware that never-smokers can get lung cancer.
