What We Do Banner

ALK Positive UK

Our purpose is to extend the overall survival and quality of life of ALK-positive lung cancer patients across the UK.

About Alk-positive lung cancer

ALK-positive lung cancer is a rare form of lung cancer caused by a mutation.  It usually affects non-smokers and most patients are younger than other lung cancer patients. Some of our members were diagnosed in their teens.

Most patients are diagnosed at Stage 4, when there isn't a cure.  However, modern targeted therapies, taken orally, can sometimes prolong life, often, but not always, for several years.

About the Charity, ALK Positive UK

The Charity was formed in 2018 by Debra Montague, who remains as Chair, initially with 55 members but now over 800.

The Charity is patient-focused and patient-led, with the majority of the trustees being patients.

Our core activities are -

  • supporting patients and their close family

  • empowering patients so that they can be involved in shared decisions with their healthcare providers about their treatment

  • advocating for best practice throughout the UK

  • campaigning to raise awareness that anyone, including non-smolkers, can get lung cancer

  • campaigning for early diagnosis

How the Charity is Managed

Of the 5 trustees, 4 are patients. Each trustee has a special responsibility for designated activities.

The Chief Executive Officer is responsible for administration and is assisted by

  • Operations and Administration Officer

  • Finance Assistant

  • Admin Assistant (New members)

  • Admin Assistant (Conference Bookings)

All staff are part-time, working from home.  The CEO and O&A Officer work 20 hours and the Assistants 5 hours a week.

We also have a team of volunteers.

We engage outside contractors, e.g. Social Media Manager and Life Coach.

Operations & Administrative Officer

The Operations and Administartive Officer will work closely with and under the direction of the CEO to provide administrative services.  In addition, the O&A Officer will carry out projects as determined by the CEO, e.g. assisting in the preparation of grant applications.

We use

  • Microsoft Office Suite

  • Monday.com

  • Mail Chimp

  • Survey Monkey

  • Wix Website

The Job Description sets out the role in more detail.

Althought the hours are flexible within normal office hours, we would want the postholder to define them in advance, e.g. 3 full days a week or 5 half-days or a mixture, say, 2 full days and 2 half-days.

The Terms of Employment set out other tems.

The appointment can be on a contract basis or directly employed.
